Our mission is to help fill some of the gaps with the things these kids need most – backpacks and school supplies, warm new coats for winter and gifts to help make the holidays special. We work with local schools, shelters and churches to identify and serve children in need. And we work with generous members of our communities – like you – to fulfill the needs of these children.
Deputy Chief Willie Bailey, founder of Firefighters and Friends to the Rescue, understands the challenges disadvantaged families face today. A veteran firefighter, Bailey was driven to help after responding to 9-1-1 emergencies during the holidays. Alarmed by the number of homes without holiday decorations, trees or presents, he organized a toy drive to help 50 struggling families.
It was supposed to be a one-time event, but that was 17 years ago! Today, our mission has expanded to provide over 9,000 kids with free haircuts, backpacks filled with school supplies, warm winter coats, new sneakers and holiday gifts. "I never expected it would grow like this," says Bailey, "But businesses and people in the community have really stepped up to help fill what is a growing need in this area.”
